Ch4 P10 – In Her Element
Foooood!
These upcoming pages… I started to notice that I spent too much time working on backgrounds. I wanted things to look sketchy/painted, but I kept polishing and polishing. I think it took me three days to create this page. *grumbles* Backgrounds.

I can see how it would take a while, the detail looks pretty intricate. I tend to do that with other things (not the best at drawing), I think it’s a part of the OCD and an innate tendency to over think, coupled with ADD making me forget the existence of what we call time. I start out with something simple and then just keep going deeper and deeper into detail and suddenly 3-5 hours have passed without me realizing. Also, I’m sure Noni knows Only a few of them can eat real food, and she’s just cooking because she loves doing so. Either that, or we can plan to see one very sad or angry Noni in the near future!
Oh hey cool, it seems I’ve somehow managed to leave the first comment. Too bad that has ABSOLUTELY NO RELEVENCE OR IMPORTANCE TO ANYTHING AT ALL EVER! I’m looking at you, Anyone Who Has Ever Declaired “First” In A Comment. . . apparently the person I’m looking at has an excessivley long name, much like my arch-nemisis John Jacob Jingleheimer Smith.
Hmm… You’re the second person I’ve heard speak of this “John Jacob Jingleheimer Smith.” I wonder if he’s related to either John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt, or John Michael Finnigan Beginnagain. :p
i like the backgrounds they look very nice.
oh and FIRST MWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
weither im first or not does not matter i have declaired it there by making it so
Silly ghost, don’t you understand that to a true cook the pleasure is in the cooking?
(of course, watching people beg for seconds is pretty cool too…)
If you love what you do, I wouldn’t knock it.
Doesn’t she realize that the person she’s talking to *is* one of those few people?
It’s a hard balance to find, isn’t it, getting the level of detail you want in the background without going overboard? Dunno if this might help, but another comic I’m taking some inspiration from in finding that balance (which you may have already seen) is “Next Town Over”
Incidentally, I really love the picture of the croissants! ^_^ I’m not sure what you did there, but the linework in that panel seems to blend especially well into your overall art style.
I love “Next Town Over!” I get inspiration from it every time I see a new page. I think part of it is fear that it will look like I’m cutting corners, but in fact I’m searching for that balance. I’ve always been in awe at those who have mastered the “less is more” when it comes to art. I tend to overwork things, and I never know when to stop.
The panel you mentioned was inked with the brush I used from the beginning of the comic. (Back when I was learning how to use SAI.) I’ve recently switched to Manga Studio 5, and my linework is looking a little different, similar to what you’ve pointed out. (I think it’s page 27 when I made the switch.)
Amanita: “It’s like she’s on a cocktail of cocaine, meth, and espresso.”
Noni: “Curses, how did they find out about the secret ingredients already?!”
Oh wow the way you draw the butter being spread on the croissant is so realistic my mouth is watering o_O *drools*
seriously tho that’s fantastically done.
As you may be able to tell from looking at the date/time on my reply here, I’ve only recently found this comic & still have some catching up to do; thusly, I’ve been reading these last few pages all at once instead of waiting for each update.
For the past few pages, I’ve been getting progressively hungrier & hungrier because of the artwork quality. I also haven’t had the chance to do some necessary grocery shipping yet, so to sum it up in a single word – STHAP!
Oh well, I can still fix up some lemon-pepper chicken hindquarters…BRB.
Ok, now that I’m set for today anyway, I think I can do my grocery shopping tomorrow…But crouissants & pies (& COOKIES!) are getting added to the shopping list…
